Complete lyrics for "To Obey"

Saul became king at the age of thirty
He reigned over Israel forty years and two
He knew that the hand of the Lord would always be with him
If he obeyed God in all that he purposed to do.

To obey...
is better than sacrifice.
And to heed the Lord is better than the fat of rams.

Saul was hard-pressed by the Philistines at Gilgal
All of the Hebrews were quaking with fear.
So Saul did not wait for a priest to seek the Lord’s favor,
But as he finished making the offering Samuel appeared!

“What have you done, Saul?
You have acted foolishly!
And so your kingdom will never endure!
Now God will seek out a man after his own heart,
The Lord made you king, Saul, but you have not kept his command.

To obey...
is better than sacrifice.
And to heed the Lord is better than the fat of rams. (repeat)

Saul swore that no man should eat ‘til the foes were defeated.
They routed the Philistine army all through the land.
Jonathon, son of the king, had tasted some honey.
Saul would have slain him then had not his men stayed his hand.

Then God ordered Saul to go and attack the Amalekites,
And to destroy them completely – but Saul disobeyed.
Saul spared King Agag and took sheep and cattle to sacrifice,
When Samuel heard the sheep bleat he was greatly dismayed.

(repeat)
